Hi,
does anybody know, how to reduce EPS file size?
I'm using Illustrator CS and have a complex vector file, but no matter how hard I try, I can't get a smaller EPS file than 28Mb. It's too much IMHO, when someone wants to download it.
Any ideas? |

Here's what I wrote in another post concerning CorelDraw, it should be the reasoning for Illustrator though its been a couple of years since I used Illustrator.
"There are several ways to affect the size of the file. Once you hit ok after you chosen a name then the dialog box comes up which gives the options of tiff or wmf (wmf will be smaller), dpi size, 8 bit 16 bit etc etc. Also when you save you can select the drawing only and save selected only which will remove all the blank white space. Also if you have text change it to curves not text. Best bet is play with the options and watch the size dialog box to see how it affects your size. " |

Hi Dennis,
thank you very much for your response!
Since I'm trying to save my vector drawing as AI8 compatible EPS file I don't have many options to choose. Only these:
Maybe I have to do something before I export my drawing? |

Wow, that's a very large eps. Did you leave your source drawing in the background? Or in a turned off layer? |

Most likely changing from tiff to some other choice will reduce it greatly. Also trying reducing the size of the drawing before saving. Of course only after saving the original. Experimentation is the only way to find the optimal settings. |

Set your preview to "none". That will reduce the file size quite a bit.

If you change preview from transparent to opaque in the options, sometimes size decreases. |

Also you can open the eps file in illustrator and save as eps again. It works to me several times. |

Generally it works when I close Illustrator and reopen it. Maybe illustrator increase file size with the historical ocurrencies or something like this. |

Try:
1. Delete all unused brushes and swatches.
2. Turn off document thumbnails.
3. Reduce the amount of gradients.

Another way to reduce the eps file size, is to open it in acrobat and then resave the file as an eps. This creates a generic eps which is a fraction of the original size.
I use this method when I need to email it to another client.

But these are good suggestions, I use them all the time now. I believe, somebody else will definitely benefit from them too. |
