I might be imagining this but I think DT has really moved forward in just the last year, fullfilling all criteria for a good agency. Its not often I give advice but you sound really frustrated, so here goes: Any digital exposure calls for exposing to the histograms right side. i.e. better to underexpose then overexpose, that way you bring out details in the shadow-areas which otherwise would show what we call artifacts. Dont use Levels for the black/white settings. Use the Curve tool and its not enough to just push sliders, youve got to go out on the image, using the little samplers and click on darkest and whitest spot ( you have to find them). Further you have to calibrate this Curve tool to the correct values, many use blacks=8 and whites= 248. Having said all this: your in-camera settings are the most important.
