I got sick of cruddy lighting in my product pictures so I'm building my own light tent from a PVC cube and some white nylon fabric. I figure I can get it made for about half the price of what B&H sells the same size for. My wife is great at sewing so she's doing all that work for me. I draped the fabric over the cube last night and placed some lights around it and it looked great.
I also have a friend that hooked me up with a marble/granite place near my house that has TONS of scrap pieces they just toss out after jobs. I've grabbed some perfect pieces in every different color from there.
I'll try to post a picture of my light tent when it's done. :-)

I am sure that the photos shot with it will turn out awesome! Lighting really is such an important part of the photo.

Here is my version of a light tent using ordinary stuff you would find at a stationary store.
The best part is it all cost less than $50
A bit of photoshop helps a lot.

Doogie your box looks good - I made a light box using advice from the forums and various internet sites. The box turned out good (so it's worth trying to build your own), but unfortunately I cannot get the lighting right, although I'm having fun trying! |

I have an ex co-worker that owns a lighting store. He can't get true photography setups, but he can definitely get all the bulbs at cost. From what he said that is where a ton of the markup is so it will definitely help down the road. |

I have trouble with lightning on mine. Made with pvc type pipe - it can be taken apart and stored when not in use. Less than $12.00 total cost. Any advice on ightning would be helpful. |

Yeah, lighting is always an issue, sometimes I just wrap some white linen around the lamp's head to soften the light source.
Just keep trying and you'll get it right somehow.
P.S. photoshop is a must in isolated photography. |

I always try to use the color correctional gray card too. That helps a ton when you don't have the best lighting setup. My birthday is coming up in a couple weeks, so I'm hoping to get some cash to buy a strobe or two. |

A light tent is about as much use as a UV filter;You will be giving yourself more lighting problems than you need,your images will be flat,and conflicting shadows difficult to control-throw the idea away with the UV filter
