I have illustrator, freehand, corel and indesign but my fave is definately freehand. Does anyone else share my opinion? If so, why? |

I'm fairly sure that Adobe (having bought Macromedia) are no longer developing Freehand, so for continued support and updates Illustrator would be a better option.
I'm a die-hard Mac user, so I simply can't bring myself to even think about Corel, sorry!
Having said all that, I know how to use both Illustrator and Freehand pretty extensively, and there are some features and working practices within the recent versions of Freehand which would be excellent additions to Illustrator. I suspect that Illustrator will now incorporate some of these in future updates. At least I hope so.

Hey Stuartkey, thanks for the response.
I'm also a Mac fanatic, I've got a 20" iMac with the maximum memory upgrade and a little 13" Macbook (the black one) for home which I connect to a 22" monitor. Works great. I also use Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro at the studio. I like Illustrator for it's PDF editing capabilities. It's a damn shame about Adobe not wanting to update or develop Freehand any more, I've been using it for about 10 years now. Adobe should sell the rights to it to another company who wants to continue with it. Where I come from, South Africa, it's still the preferred application for most of the major advertising agencies, design houses and printing companies although Illustrator and Indesign have also been creeping in a lot more recently. I don't like Corel at all either but I have to have it because clients sometimes give me Corel files for me to work on a bit and get ready for print, it's mostly the smaller home-based businesses who don't really know better yet. The Mac version was difficult to get hold of here, I had to order it. |

I too am a Mac user and have been since 1990, one of the first applications I used was Freehand, although I converted to Illustrator about three years later and never looked back. I have used Freehand on and off over the years, but I still prefer Illustrator. I guess it depends on what you are used to using. |

I think Illustrator never will be a multi page program because Adobe wants to promote Indesign. |

I have been getting to grips with using Indesign as I purchased the Adobe Creative Suite. Having used Quark Xpress for 17 years, it can be a little frustrating using a different page layout program. However, I am not about to spend huge sums of money on the latest Quark, so Indesign is now my preferred program.
I have never considered Illustrator to be a page layout application, I just use it for creating my illustrations and logo's etc. |

Yes, but Freehand allows a very useful page layout, very comfortable and time-saver. |

I do miss that feature. It was quite sweet. Not a deal-breaker, though. I used to prefer Freehand, but we only have illustrator at work so I've slowly changed to that. DO they even make Freehand anymore? |

Personally I like CorelDraw I have sused them all just find Corel to make more sense to me. |

I still think freehand is still the best out there because its ease of use and is highly intuitive compared to illustrator. One feature for example in Freehand that is miles better than Illustrator is the clipping mask. It's a lot easier and faster to do in Freehand while in Illustrator it takes a few more steps to achieve the same results. Freehand is really a time saver especially when your working a tight deadline. |

CorelDraw here also (X3 version).
Working with it since version 3 for illustration and DTP.
Like illustrator, never used freehand.
Feel better using coreldraw for DTP and not indesign even with heavy text layouts. I know indesign is best for DPT but I feel I'm loosing control of the layout with it.
Finally Xara is a cute little thing to use for illustration. |

Switching programs can be an uphill battle too. I'm now able to work pretty convincingly in freehand, illustrator and indesign. My favourite... (drum roll)... still definately freehand. Why? there are so many reasons that I can sit here listing them till the cows come home. Some software development company somewhere should duplicate the entire program, name it something similar and put a bazilion dollar advertising budget behind it and follow it up with updates and support. If I had the skills and/or money I would do it myself. Not that Illustrator or Indesign are bad by any means, but in my opinion they don't come close to Freehand.
But that's just me. Happy illustrating! |

I wouldn't compare indesign with freehand and illustrator. Indesign is a page layout, it works great with text but not so well with trace. They're different things.
I like very much freehand, because it's easyer than illustrator, it's more intuitive (in my opinion). Tools for modifying bezier curves are easyer in freehand.
I used coreldraw 15 years ago, and I didn't like it.
Have you ever tried Inkscape? Free and open source? I've downloaded it but I haven't enough time to really try it. |

Ok ok, I've worked it out now, so this is my theory:
PC + Coreldraw = home and small office use
PC or Mac + Freehand = print shop and repro use
Mac + Illustrator & InDesign = pro designer use
So you're right (in a way) that you can't compare Freehand to Illustrator & InDesign, but most people will be using 'either or' to achieve the same results, it's just that they both have strengths and weaknesses in getting there.
I'm starting to shift my attention more to video & audio production anyway... Final Cut & Logic anyone?

Hi Elisanth. Thats a funky hairstyle. Are you talking about the Hot Door one? It's $99. A bit expensive for what you get don't you think? For me the most annoying thing is that when you make a clipping mask, the object loses it's fill and stroke. That's just adds unnecessary extra time to your workflow. Why do masked items still get selected when you click-drag your mouse over the outside of the mask? What about 'Collect For Output'?
Oh well... we press on with all of illustrators imperfections. We have to, no application is perfect.

You are right about expensive plug-ins.
Also I hate that annoying thing with substracting objects - they are alive! :) They change their places after Pathfinder operations.. And gradient - it is not so smart :)
And of course no application is perfect. Anyway, I preffer Adobe.
