| im having a tough time deciding |

between the nikon d80 and the canon 450d for my first dslr
i keep reading over and over again many different reviews/specs etc. but it still isnt making my decision any easier so i though id turn here for some help
I like doing alot of studio work, build it yourself lightboxes and that kinda stuff, as well as just going down the street shooting images for stock
my budget could reach up to the 40d or the d200, but it would take me more time to save up for good lenses etc. if i pick one of those
I know by picking between nikon or canon is a big decision but im not overly concerned about it, i hear their both good choices
I'd prefer something lightweight (Im not someone with big hands/fingers)
Stock is definitely going to be the purpose behind buying the camera
Im looking for something that I can be happy with for 2-4 years before upgrading, not something that as I learn more and more and become better will no longer meet up to my needs, im concerned about image quality and having low noise, and finally im not overly concerned with simplicity, as i am very willing to learn
I know thats alot of information, but I'm just trying to throw as much out there as I can so that I can get some good recommendations for feedback

stay away from large amounts of pixels, when manufacturers cram lots of pixels onto a sensor the image quality drops and the noise increases, I would look at the canon 400D or 30D - or nikon equivalents, you can get them pretty cheap new and even cheaper used giving you more money to spend on glass. the 450D just has too many pixels, the noise will be worse than the 400D and despite the digic III processor the buffer is smaller than that of the 400D - so you can take fewer pictures in one burst, important for sports - and do you really need live view? I bought a decent, but cheapish body and splashed out on the glass - it worked for me :) |

For what it is worth I use the Nikon D80, absolutly love it and have no plans of upgrading. I do a lot of studio shots, with alien bees and use it primarily for microstock. |

In my opinion since your doing alot of studio work, I would definitely recommend the Nikon D80 because their creative lighting system is second to none. If you are looking to really get serious in photography, invest your money in a cheap body and try shooting in the lowest ISO possible and in one really good lens (hopefully cheap) and blow the rest on a good lighting setup. You'll be amazed in the pics you can create with a good lighting setup.

I have the D50 now and will be upgrading to the D80 within the month or so. I like the way the D80 feels when holding it and shooting pictures. |

Best bet is to stay with the D50, I am looking at getting a second one, to save changing lenses. Only The D50 and the D70 have the capability to synch off-camera flash at 1/4000 and 1/8000 sec respectively-the only other camera that can do this is the Canon 1DsMk3. Using this facility, you can have total control of ambient lighting when using flash-you can make images taken in midday sun look as though they were taken in twilight, etc. Also these two Nikons are the only cameras that synch at 1/500sec with inbuilt and hot-shoe flash.Regards, Ken |

Give also a look to the new Olympus E-520 model (or E-3 if you want a very solid body) and the new lenses Olympus has made (the amazing 12-60 zoom, the 25 pancake, the 9-18 ultrawideangle...) |
