"I believe that as a free diver I am able to interact with marine wildlife in a more natural environment, without the distraction and disturbance of bubbles and ventilators."
After graduating from Wake Forest University, Marty Wakat worked with Polaroid Digital Imaging during the mid 90s and it was there that his passion with digital photography began. In 2008 he moved from 10,000ft in altitude away from the cold of Breckenridge Colorado to the tropical warmth of Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. As soon as he arrived he fell in love with the ocean and free diving and began shooting photography with a point and shoot underwater camera. Now equipped with a Canon 7D DSLR camera and Ikelite underwater housing and strobes, Marty Wakat photographs Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles which are a major photographic focal point, but also shoots all Hawaiian marine reef life from the smallest coral polyps or christmastree worms to the largest of Spinner dolphins or Humpback whales. Focusing on marine reef life from the Kona and Kohala coastline, Marty continues to explore the underwater world and wishes to share his experiences with all who want to enjoy it.
